You Know Your Team is Bad When ...

you get a note like this from a sales guy after purchasing tickets to two games:

Despite the embarrassingly large number of losing seasons, we will be at opening day tomorrow.  And we will cheer for our hometown team until they are again champs.

Right now they're 3 and 2.  We usually start the season as hopeful fans.

Maybe even the only fans ...

LET'GBUCS!

What is a Spirit?

Recently the kids and I went out to run some errands.  Our first stop was the home of a friend of Elizabeth's whose grandmother had passed away a few days before, the second stop, the beer distributor.  In Pennsylvania you have beer distributors and state run liquor stores.  You can't get wine and beer at the same place.

While getting Brian buckled into the car after leaving Elizabeth's friend's house, Elizabeth says to me, "Mom, what's a spirit?"

At this moment I'm thinking, Wow, that's a really deep question, like how the Catechism talks about God being spirit and she must be wondering since her friend's grandma just died.  How the heck am I supposed to answer that?  Oh dear, I have to give some kind of response....

I say, "You mean like God is a spirit?"

"No, mom, like a spirit you drink.  Like there's wine and spirits," Elizabeth replies.

Phew!  Dodged that bullet.  I still don't really know how a "spirit" is defined in drink land, but at least I don't have to spew bad theology.

"Well honey, I think it's an alcoholic drink not made from grapes that has a lot more alcohol in it.  Like rum is made form sugar, for example."

End conversation.

Now I suppose I need to read a little about how "spirit" is defined, in both senses, but for the time being I'm just enjoying a little laugh whenever I think of this conversation.  Here's a little hello from my little ones:

He's a Clever One

I was working on this blanket for a friend.  (Steelers colors, yes, but also of the Penguins and the Pirates; three cheers for a town whose pro sports teams all have the same colors!)

It's knit on the diagonal, so you spend the first half of the blanket increasing a stitch each row, then you decrease one stitch each row on the second half.  You can find the pattern here; it's super easy - if you knit - and a fun baby gift.  (I've never done it with the hood.)

My witty husband was keeping me company as I worked, and came up with a novelty t-shirt idea based on the verse "He must increase; I must decrease." John 3:30, where John the Baptist speaks of Jesus.  Picture it: the name Jesus above an illustration of increasing a stitch in knitting, next to the word I with an illustration of decreasing a stitch, with the Scripture reference below.

So nerdy.

But right up my humor alley.

Anyone want to design it ...

... for the three people that might buy it?

Hide and Seek

Can anyone find the beaver in this picture?

I can't see him either, but I know he was there when I took the photograph!

The Pittsburgh Zoo has this cute little beaver family that we saw first when they were itty-bitty babies. Now they're all as big as mama and papa. I told the kids this was probably the dad up on the stairs, trying to get some peace and quiet!

We stuck to the Kid's Kingdom on this visit. We pet some goats and enjoyed watching a very friendly sea lion.

My favorite part, though, was that big, fat beaver grooming himself (herself?) alone at the top of those stairs. Aren't we parents always trying to find a little corner in which to be alone? :)

A Serious Trip to the Art Museum

We took our end-of-September field trip to the Carnegie Museum of Art. The day was wet and dreary, ideal for such a visit. We had a lovely time. Brian was exceptionally well behaved as we strolled through the galleries, taking in the variety of pieces on display.

We're so high culture, aren't we?

As proof, here's the final activity we enjoyed on our way to the parking garage:

High culture indeed!

Can You "Pump Up a Bump"?

She can.

That's how Elizabeth referred to flexing her bicep for the first time yesterday.

Have you tried to "pump up a bump" yet today?

It May Have Been School Vacation Week

It sure was vacation week!

After a week off, here was the state of Elizabeth's desk at the beginning of this fine Monday morning:

Her mother may or may not be responsible for these crazy piles of books and papers and toys and gift bags and stickers and markers and more. I suppose we'll never know.

You Never Know What You're Gonna Get...

I got a bonus gift on the bottom of one of my vegetable cans tonight;
Market Basket never disappoints!
It was cinnamon.
(Now you're wondering if I chewed it, aren't you?)

Brian teaches himself about balance and the inner ear.
I didn't even have to write a lesson plan!

This is a video and can't be viewed on Facebook.

Little Miss Chatterbox

Elizabeth and Colin are playing Mario Kart. Elizabeth is talking and talking, while driving her kart.

Colin: Elizabeth, do you ever stop taking?
Elizabeth: Uh, yea, when I'm sleeping.

And she still hasn't stopped talking.
